South Carolina, 1964: Lily runs away from her unloving father and brings her black nanny along, because she got involved with the racist outcrop of her time. She has always missed her mother and ends up in a place that has the presence of her mother written all over it. A family of bee-keeping black sisters takes her and her nanny in. Lily grows up.The story itself is well-meant, in fact it's the kind of story that I love to read. Nevertheless, I was disappointed with this book and had to struggle through it until the end. Here's why:- This book tought me the meaning of of melodramatic. The entire conflict surrounding Lily, her mother, and her hesitation to tell her landladies the truth feels blown out of proportion. I could not for the life of me understand why Lily fretted so much about it. Hence, Lily's story felt unbelievable to me, even annyoing in parts.- Why is Lily white? Kidd clearly roots for the black characters of her book -- why tell their story from the perspective of a white girl? The story is noble and I support it with all my heart. I also understand that it might be difficult for a white woman to write about black women. Yet, this is storytelling -- I wish Kidd would have been braver.But, and here's why the book still gets three stars from me: I loved the bees. Very much. After finishing the book, I promised myself to find the next bee-keeper and learn more about these fascinating animals.Overall, I would rate this book with 2.5 out of 5 stars. But because amazon won't let me do that and the language, the bees, and the idea deserve more than just 2 stars, I end up here with 3.
Die Autorin beweist enormes Einfühlungsvermögen und große Sympathie für die immer noch schwer vernachlässigte "schwarze" Seite der USA. Wie viel innige zwischenmenschliche Liebe zwischen Weißen und Schwarzen möglich ist, wird hier eindrücklich geschildert. Dabei werden die Probleme nicht ausgeblendet. Die Berührung und Beziehung zwischen den "Rassen" ist immer noch ein zartes Pflänzchen - Gott sei's geklagt! - und wird hoffentlich von einem Donald Trump nicht mit dem Fuß zerquetscht.
I nice book which has it's sad moments but is not too much of a heavy read despite some of the topics touched on - domestic abuse, racial segregation, loss of loved ones, parental neglect ... It is a novel that you can read on holiday but still contains substance.
A book that every woman - and everybody else, really - should read at least once in their lives. Runaway Lily who carries a heavy burden finds strength in herself through the kindness of other women. A life-affirming read that leaves you with hope.
Inhaltlich wurde hier ja schon genug geschrieben, darauf werde ich also nicht eingehen.Das Buch ist sehr liebevoll geschrieben und die Charaktere wirken sehr authentisch und nachvollziehbar.Würde ich auf jeden Fall weiterempfehlen
This is a touching novel that immerses the reader in the lives of the characters set against a convincing background. Lily, the main character, has to learn to deal with the personal pain she endures as a result of her complex past and she comes to terms with her suffering as she is embraced by a motherhood of caring women. Highly recommended reading!
